I have just been to Bohol last weekend to attend the wedding of Enrico Miquiabas, a handsome young man teaching in an International School in Mainland China, to Austrian (of Italian descent) Maria Kattavenos who looks like a dark-haired Barbie doll. The wedding took place in the charming 16th century church of Our Lady of the Assumption Shrine in Dauis. There were over 20 Austrians who came all the way to Bohol for the wedding, while we were close to 50 from all over the Philippines representing the groom’s side.

In the last few months, I had been shuttling between Cebu and Bohol, on one hand and between Cebu and Southern Leyte, on the other hand. No matter how inconsequential my uneducated observation may be, I cannot help but note the wide gap in the development of the tourism industry between Bohol and Southern Leyte.

I noticed this distortion even from one simple indicator – sea travel. What may catch anyone’s attention is the fact that Bohol, my province of birth, is very much accessible compared to Southern Leyte, where we do a modest business. There are many seaports serving the Boholanos that anytime of the day this province can be reached from Cebu. The frequency of fast crafts servicing Tagbilaran is phenomenal. There are trips early morning, noontime, and evening, and in air conditioned comfort. Still, their percentage of passenger loads, travel season or not, appears to be satisfactorily high as to support the industry.

Kayaking from Cebu to Bohol

The third and final leg of this year’s Philippine Kayaking Series was held in Cebu and Bohol last 3-6 of December.

Paddlers from all over the country competed on this leg, which covers a total distance of 125 kilometers crossing from Cebu to Bohol.

German Paz and Johnder Austria, both windsurfers from Batangas, won the leg.

Endorsed by the Department of Tourism, the race aims to promote kayaking into a sustainable eco-adventure attraction in coastal communities.

Bohol In Pictures

I miss Bohol... then I stumbled upon Inday Guapa's blog and saw some wonderful Bohol pictures, and I miss it even more!

I came across Wanderlust In Motion blog (www.indayguapa.com) while googling for blogs about Bohol by Bol-anons. The author, Inday Guapa, who describes herself as an adventurer at heart, writes about her travel adventures on this blog.

Ang Pambansang T-shirt - Visit Bohol

In addition to Tarsier shirt, I found another Bohol shirt that I like, while doing a Google search again. The shirt maker is Team Manila and this t-shirt is from its Ang Pambansang T-shirt range.

The Visit Bohol t-shirt's main design is that of the iconic Chocolate Hills, done in sepia tone that seems to evoke nostalgia to the wearer. When you click on this link to view the shirt, you will not be directed to it right away. Instead, look for the right box that says EXPLORE THE ISLANDS and click THE COLLECTIONS to view this shirt design together with a host of other designs.

This shirt is going to be one of my must-haves when I go home. It's just a shame that I can't seem to buy it online nor can I buy it in or near Bohol e.g. Cebu, perhaps. At the moment, you can only buy this in the malls of Metro Manila. Maybe this will change next year before we go home.

British diving magazine feature Panglao Island: A Postcript

After I posted the original article, I realised that when you go to Diver's website and then search for the article it was not there yet. The site featured its December 2007 issue and not the January 2008 issue, which is where Panglao was featured as diving holiday destination.

British diving magazine feature Panglao Island

Diver, Britains's best-selling diving magazine, has featured Panglao as one of the holiday diving destinations in 2008 on its Holiday Special issue (January 2008).

The article, "No Rush to Surface", features its author's (Gerald Rambert) experience in diving Balicasag Island, one of the best diving sites in Bohol, if not the whole country. An underwater photographer, the author narrated his wonderful dives in the island's five main dive sites. Rambert talked about seeing different types of nudibranchs and a mindblowing variety of fish. He also described the abundance of hard and soft corals - especially his favourite soft corals; pink, green and red see-through Dendronephthya.

Although the article mainly featured the diving sites, it also mentioned other popular tourist attractions in Bohol like the Chocolate Hills and Loboc River. These attractions are just among the many that gives Bohol an edge over other Philippine diving destinations. After a break in diving, tourists are spoilt for choice to try other exciting non-diving experiences. I hope that with this feature article, more British tourists (divers and non-divers alike) will visit Bohol in the coming year.
